April 22, 2022 is when this year’s edition of Earth Day will take place. But it’s also the date of another big deal when it comes to the environment — specifically, when the groundbreaking for a, well, groundbreaking wildlife crossing will take place. That would be the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing in Agoura Hills, California.
This event has been in the works for a while now, and the reason behind it is simple — preventing wildlife from wandering onto a highway makes that highway safer for both animals and drivers. And given that mountain lions are among the animals at risk here, we’re looking at a situation that could turn chaotic very quickly.
An Associated Press dispatch (via Autoblog) offers more details on the groundbreaking and bridge, which will cross Highway 101. All told, it will be 200 feet long, spanning 10 lanes of highway. It will be the closest bridge of its kind to a major metropolitan area, situated 35 miles from downtown Los Angeles.
What will be most notable about the bridge is the way that it will connect hillsides on both sides of the freeway. Its design will include brush and other plants growing on it — something that will, one hopes, entice the local animals to make use of it.
