Evidently the hottest pop culture of the 2020s is going to look a lot like the pop culture of the late 1990s and early 2000s. September brought with it the news that a new Final Destination film had found its directors; as it turns out, there’s another franchise getting a new lease on life, and it might involve sex with pastries.

The summer of 1999 saw the release of American Pie, a comedy about a group of high school friends trying to lose their virginity. Within the context of the film, Jason Biggs did unspeakable things to a freshly-baked pie, leading to one of the most memorable Onion stories of all time and resulting in a franchise that spanned three sequels and five spin-offs, many of which featured the great Eugene Levy.

And now, like so many other familiar cinematic franchises, American Pie looks like it’s making a comeback. The Hollywood Reporter‘s Rebecca Sun writes that Sujata Day “is set to develop and write” a new American Pie film. Day’s debut film as a writer/director, Definition Please, received positive reviews upon its release. Day has also acted in multiple projects from Issa Rae, including Insecure and The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.

All of which begs a series of questions: will Day be able to put a unique spin on the franchise? Will Eugene Levy make an appearance? Will the the pie be literal or metaphorical? The Hollywood Reporter‘s article doesn’t have many more details on the project — but one hopes we’ll know soon enough.
